Bobby,
If this issue is not resolved, you can do the following:
1. On the Gui highlight the (master server) name from the left column
and right click then select change server and
    you will get a window.
2. Select the server you want to delete and click remove (you may get
an error 25 could not connect the server).
That will take care of it.

Regards,

-Karim A.

You have to set the Copy #2 (Pool B) Copy to the Primary Copy.

Investigate bpexpdate with the -npc switch. Netbackup does not
automatically do this for you. You might investigate taking out the
copy #2 instead of the copy #1 to make this sort of thing easier.
(Switch which copy writes where in your policy configuration.)

Hi simple question for all you pros...

I set up a backup schedule that is set to backup to two volume pools at
the same time.. I have restored from the first pool (Pool A) and now
what to restore from the second (Pool B) but cant get backup, archive and
restore to switch from the tape in volume "Pool A" even if i take the
tape from Pool A out of the library and leave the tape from "Pool B"
when setting of the restore it still look for the tape taken out can you
guys tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I am currently using Netbackup 6 MP5 and specified multiple copies in
the policy attributes (set to two copies 99999 priority)

Thanks

On Windows, this info is in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\vrts\nbe\/N/B/E/Login/Lists\vr

(yes, they actually used forward slashes in the names..) There is a key
called "host/List" that contains the list.

We have retired some servers and I would like the host name from showing
up as an option in the Java GUI login screen.

Anyone know where that info is stored?

On UNIX, for the Java GUI, you'll need to look in

If you're on a UNIX system, poke around ~/.java/.userPrefs/vrts. It
might be in any number of XML files underneath that directory (I
shouldn't have to add "hand edit at your own risk" but I will). You
could also just rename the entire directory to "start over from scratch"
and blow it away later (again, rename and/or blow away at your own
risk).

If you're on Windows, it looks like your registry key equivalents of
these XML files can be found underneath
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\vrts, but I'm even MORE
paranoid about making changes THERE, so forget I said anything. :)

(I'm running 6.5.1 and can't vouch completely for earlier versions but
hopefully this should give you a general idea of where to look)

Thanks,
CRZ

Long title, huh?

I know I could dig into the docs but you guys are usually faster.

Right now I backup our one Netapp CIFS as a unix NFS mount. I miss all
the ACL's but that's not a big problem with this share since it's pretty
much all owned by the same group. Discussion in a meeting today may
lead to a lot more CIFS shares but they're very much cross-owned and the
Windows ACLs are about to become important.

I could build a windows media server and backup the shares that way -
all the nice ACL's come along for the ride. However, I've gone years
now without becoming a windows admin and I like it that way. I'd rather
look at NDMP direct to tape (SSO share) of the volume containing the
share.

Do any of you know if the NDMP backup will grab all the ACL information
so the winders users stay happy?

In the early days of SSO, mixing Windows and Unix media servers sharing

Any experience with the current software set? Anybody mixing Windows &

Does anyone have an easy way of duplicating data from disk to tape for a

from 8pm - 9am Tu-Fri. I do not want to run inline copy or multiple
copies. Any ideas?

Vault is excellent for doing this is an automated sort of way.

Otherwise, look up the docs on bpduplicate and start writing some script
to kick off with your windows scheduler of choice(had to go back to
remove "cron").

If you're using DSU's, you shouldn't need to mess with this at all.

We've been doing it since at least 4.5 and I think 3.4. Works fine.
We're
currently at 6.5.1 with Solaris 10, Solaris 9, and Win2003 64-bit.

Tim, yes, once they are expired they go back to scratch and can be
re-used
just like any tape. No more catalog tape header issues.

from scratch pool

Thanks for the responses.

The thing is, it's not expected as far as I'm concerned. It would be if
there were no tapes available for catalog backups but there are, as I
mentioned. We only have 1 week retention on the catalog backups and
there
are 2 LTO3 tapes available so it's very unlikely they would both be
full.
Therefore, this is the 'rogue behaviour' I was referring to - because of
this, I want to claim my normal backup tapes back rather than letting
them
stay in the catalog pool and was wondering how to do it. Reading between
the lines of you answers I'm guessing that all I need to do is expire
the
tapes and they will return to the scratch pool.
What I was concerned about was whether once a tape has been assigned as
a
catalog tape it could be used for normal backups without an erase or
something like that.

Cheers,

Tim

As Ed said, the hot catalog backups are now treated like any other
policy
would be treated - ie taking tapes from scratch, retention, appending to
existing tapes in the pool, etc.

If you are using tapes from scratch more than you think, take a look at
what your retentions are set to. Do you really need to keep the catalog
backups for 1 month? Maybe you are backing it up too often (or not
enough!). Keep in mind if you change retentions, it's probably going to
use a couple more tapes if you don't have like retentions in the catalog
pool.

In short, this is expected behavior and as Ed said, leave it alone! =)

With NBU 6.0, you don't need to do anything special. Catalog tapes will
be taken from the Scratch pool if necessary and will be put back when
they
expire. Your hot catalog backups have a frequency and retention just
like
any other backup. As the images expire, the tapes go back to the pool
automatically - they're not "rogue" at all. You don't need to move them
around yourself - just let NetBackup do its thing.

Hi,

I've noticed that on occasion, the NBU hot catalog ('NBU-catalog' type
policy) backups seem to not use the tapes in the CatalogBackup volume
pool
and grabs a tape from the scratch pool. There are 2 LTO3 tapes in that
pool (CatalogBackup) specifically for catalog backups and I don't think
they are full so I'm unsure why it does this at all, albeit rarely.
Now, the question is, how can I return these rogue tapes to the scratch
pool? If I just move it back to scratch pool will it be used for normal
backups, or do I need to erase the tape?

Cheers,

You have to upgrade to 5.0 MP4 or later first in order to upgrade to
6.x.
Symantec recommends the latest MP available for whatever 5.x version you
upgrade to. Either way, the upgrade to 5.x will keep the policies in
tact,
and so will the upgrade to 6.5.

If you want your policies dumped out, check out the bppllist command. It
does look like the same policy/class directories exist in 6.x, so it
might
be possible to just copy/paste to the new system, if that is what you
are
asking. I have not tried this on 6.x but recommend you do some
significant
testing - worst case you have to manually recreate them.

Can you export your policies under netbackup 4.5 to be inputed to
upgrade
to netbackup 6.5

That's a loaded question and a lot tougher than it appears to be. What
about a job that started at 8:30am but finished at 9:30am? Or one that
started at 7pm but ended at 9pm?

What problem are you really trying to solve? Have you looked at DSSUs
or
multiple volume pools to solving this?
