Thanks to all on this thread.
The below response is where I'll place my stake in the sand.
This is the official answer I got from Veritas support this morning
regarding this:
Sorry its not a direct answer to the question but product
marketing have not formalised this.

It appears you misread something. He was saying that 6.5
isn't
considered a "major" release change (being a 6.x like 6.0) so the
EOL
wouldn't occur until 7.x. Accordingly there's no reason to
talk about
it "changing". It might but then again Symantec might go
belly up like
Enron, global warming might accelerate to the point where it
is 10,000
degrees, someone might start shooting off nukes or the sun might
go
nova. The idea of the discussion was to try to provide the
Symantec
philosophy - not carve out new commandments in
stone.

But it changes! Just like Micrsofts
approach to kill NT off ---
threatened
to end support.... And at the
last minute extended it ! Why .... Because
people were not
ready.
Surely Symantec can see that.... 6.5 on the way .... My guess is
there
will
be a 7.0 too !! (Long way I know)

The difference being the author of this
email was from Symantec and he
was
trying to explain the company's
philosophy in addition to the dry facts
of
the
link.

Oct 2007 End of Support
Symantec's support documents clearly spell
out what is and isn't
supported
based on major/minor version
numbers.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/custserv-ent.nsf/docid/200612011400
2855
Bottomline,
Symantec provides "standard support" on a product for 30
months,
or
until it is EOL'd (i.e. the EOL message this chain referred to).
Once
a
product is EOL it goes into a 30 month standard support
countdown
(Symantec
has the ability to choose whether they put the patch
in the older
version,
or write for the newer version only). At the
end of the 30 months,
Symantec
will require you to upgrade only if the
problem you encounter is a new
problem that requires a code fix to resolve
(i.e. Symantec is not
obligated
to write the fix, but suggest you
upgrade to resolve). Standard support
is
provided on a major
release and all minor releases and maintenance
packs,
etc.
Assuming that is true, 6.5 is simply an extension to 6.0. 5.1
if
EOL'd in Oct should still be eligible for "standard support" for
an
additional 30 months (if I am reading correctly), and therefore,
should
not
be a concern to anyone on this thread.
"End of Life"
or "EOL" means when we cease marketing or distributing a
Major
Release
and its related releases of Licensed Software. The End of
Life
date
starts the timeline and process leading to End of Support Life
for that
Major Release and its related Minor Releases and Maintenance
Packs.
"Standard Support" We will initially provide "Standard Support"
for all
Cases at all Severity Levels for Licensed Software while the
Major
Release
and its related releases are generally commercially
available until the
date
of their EOL. We will then continue to provide
Standard Support for all
Cases at all Severity Levels for thirty (30)
months following EOL.
"Partial Support" is a more limited level of
Support Services than you
would
receive under "Standard Support."
Partial Support is when our technical
support engineer provides you with
known Fixes/Patches/Workarounds,
existing
Maintenance Packs, or
information from our technical knowledge base in
response to your request
for assistance. Partial Support does not
include
development of any new
modifications to your Licensed Software. Nor will
we
attempt to
reproduce the Problem or escalate issues through management
channels or to
our engineering resources. Such Partial Support will be
subject to the
availability of resources, and we may need to limit the
time
we are able
to spend on the Problem. At the end of the thirty (30) month
period
described under "Standard Support", we will cease providing any
Standard
Support, and we will cease providing any Content Updates.
Instead,
we
will provide "Partial Support" for all Cases at all Severity
Levels.
Partial Support will end seven (7) years from GA of the applicable
Major
Release. There are other instances where we may begin to provide
Partial
Support for a product. As a rule, we will only provide Standard
Support
Services for a current Major Release of Licensed Software (for
example,
version
3.0) along with two prior Major Releases (say, versions
1.0 and 2.0).
My $.02 won't buy you a cup of coffee and my summary is
not the
"official"
position of Symantec. :-) Steve

And correct me, but I did
point out the original PDF was dated 2005 ...
When
6.0 had only been
released and was seen as a total shambles of a backup
system !
So
this makes sense.... My guess.... 2008 - 09 !

This is the official answer I got from Veritas
support this morning
regarding this:
Hi
,
I have picked up your case.
Originally
when Version 6 was bought out the following was published.
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/279039.htm
However, this has not been updated and is truely out of date.
Have checked and at the moment their is no plans to end the
5.x.
We support 2 major releases so only when Version 7 comes
out will 5
be
obsoleted.
(that is not comming out
anytime soon)
Next version will be 6.5 later this
year.
Sorry its not a direct answer to the question but
product marketing
have
not formalised this.
Best
