Yes I know all that thanks. I just found it concerning that Windows or
NetBackup on the client could choose to ignore some files quietly and
the NetBackup server not know anything about it. Concerning also that
the volume of data backed up would be different from the volume of data
on the server and the NetBackup master logs not know anything about it.
In the past any files that couldn't be backed up would result in
messages or errors on the master and a non-zero return code. Makes me
wonder what else is being "hidden" that I might not know about until I
try to restore it. But if that's the way W2K3 works then I guess I'll
have to live with it.

Only similary thing I came across was the Advanced Client for Oracle
taking account of exclude lists on the client (standard Oracle agent
ignores them) and this not backing things up, quietly. Only discovered
that by restore testing. It has finally been recognised as a data loss
issue to be fixed in a forthcoming MP.

Phil,

You have an MSSQL Server running on this machine and theres a DB by the
name of RealSecureDBLog that cannot be "hot" backuped without an SQL
agent. To properly back this DB up (with the log file) you have to
either get the SQL Agent or schedule a regular DB dump from within MSSQL
and backup the dump file.

After making sure it works, just add the path to the exclude list so you
don't get any errors in the log.

Best regards,

Anas

Dear all,

Noticed a Windows 2003 full backup wasn't as big as expected, and found
messages similar to the below in the client's bpbkar log. I get these
regardless of whether Windows Open File Backups are enabled :

2:04:56.126 PM: [3328.3068] <2> tar_base::V_vTarMsgW: INF - Filtered
'Shadow Copy Components' Object: D:\MSSQL\Database\SiteProtector\Site
Database\Data\RealSecureDB.mdf
2:04:56.126 PM: [3328.3068] <2> tar_base::V_vTarMsgW: INF - Filtered
'Shadow Copy Components' Object: D:\MSSQL\Database\SiteProtector\Site
Database\Data\RealSecureDBLog.ldf

I'm being told that these just mean that the file was open and couldn't
be backed up (I know it needs a SQL Agent) - but NetBackup usually
reports this and returns a status code 1. These backups are exiting
with status code 0. Seems a bit scary...

Can anybody thow any more light on this?

thanks, Phil
