There are three ways to setup NDMP backups. Sound like you are using the one
where a media server/master has the tape drive attached and data passes over
the network, the MS/Master acts as a 3-way data mover agent. It's reffered to
as the Remote NDMP method by Symantec.

I don't have a lot of experience with this method, but I know the drive has to
be dedicated to NDMP data only before 6.0 (IE: the STU has to be NDMP), it is
only supported with Solaris or windows Media Servers/Masters, you need the ndmp
sw installed and licensed, and you're limited to the speed of the network link
minus at least 30% overhead for the protocol. And you use the "set_ndmp_attr
-auth {ndmp host} {username}" command to set the root (or other admin account)
password on the MS/Master, which sounds like sthis is the step you're missing.

Anything else you need to know is in the NDMP Admin guide.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NDMP Backup on NBU 5.1

Hi guys,

Am having issue configuring NDMP in NBU 5.1
I am trying to do a remote NDMP.
The storage unit I am trying to use is a robot on the NBU Master.
I am trying to do remote NDMP to a Netapp NAS.
IS a dedicated tape drive set for NDMP needed?
Or can I also share the tape drive with other backups?
I have tried to set the tape path as NBUMaster:Tape0 and created a NDMP storage
unit from there.
But everytime the backup runs, I get storage unit unavailable. (219).
Also, the tape drive goes to a down state always.
Am I configuring the tape drive in the right way for NDMP?

regards
Daniel
