Daniel,
Before you do anything go to the policy and check Schedules tab and
change the frequency to 1/days (once a day).

Check out vmphyinv; I've used it to inventory large numbers of unknown
tapes. Physically mounts and reads the tape, reporting on external and
internal labels, plus the type of info found (NetBackup data, NetBackup
catalog, other...). Lots of options. Lots.

Hello again

Hope everyone is having a good day. Just have a question regarding
Netbackup 6.0 MP4. Has anyone encountered an issue where certain servers
in a policy continuously run all day long while the other servers on the
policy just run once? I have to de-activate the policy until midnight
and then re-enable it for the next day. This is the only way I can stop
these jobs from re-running over and over again. Any ideas would be
appreciated, thanks in advance.

Okay, so I've found some old tapes that are mismatched. I'm guessing
there was a period in time when a pair of tape drives were swapped, so
the wrong tape was inserted and labled. That's just a guess, but it
hasn't happened on any tape with a recent assignment.

Anyway, I've got these odd tapes with valid data on them. But with the
EVSN/RVSN mismatch, they're way too difficult to track. So my best
guess is that I should duplicate the data off of them, then I get to
relabel the media.

But if I try to duplicate the image, the catalog says it's on the the
RVSN and asks to mount it. That tape is offsite and the data really
lives on another volume with a different EVSN.

How can I force Netbackup to dup the image from this odd beast, and
mount the tape where it really lives for the source?

No kidding.... wow. I'll spend some time reading through it.

Is there a way to run it non-interactively, but where it does *not*
update the database? The -non_interactive appears to apply no matter
what. Until I get familiar with it, I'm not ready to trust it.

Also, I'm not certain of all the implications.

I have a tape in my robot that has (examples here) EVSN 5 and RVSN 6.
My records show I've sent tape 6 (obviously EVSN 6) offsite. It may or
may not have valid data. I'll have to recall it to check.

With vmphyinv, is it going to try to remap RVSN 6 to barcode 5? I'm not
sure I want it to do that (in case the EVSN volume 6 has RVSN 6 on it,
and it contains other valid data).

Thank you for that info. I was trawling around in netbackup/bin all
morning. Forgot to check over on the media manager side....

Mixed Operating systems in same policy problems?

What have just had one of our Clients do a DR exercise and they reported
having problems restoring the system state on a Windows 2003 box. It has
been proposed by some that the problem rest with the fact that the
backup policy has both Windows 2k and Windows 2k3 systems (and backup
selection set to "All_Local_Drives", which should get system files,
shadow copies, and system states). I personally haven't ever encountered
this, and have actually checked my records and found that on my last DR
at another site, I was able to successfully restore 4 systems (two 2k's
and two 2k3 servers) which were in the same policy. Has anyone
encountered this before?

With Netbackup 5.1, I would also recommend making sure that your
Windows 2003 clients are on MP5 at the very least. Pre-MP5 and you will
not be backing up the entire System State/Registry.

Shouldn't have anything to do with it. NBU will "sense" if it is 2k or
2k3 and use the appropriate backup method for the system state etc., as
long as you are using the "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" directive. I have used this
in many locations with no problem, either will normal backup/restore or
DR exercises.

No problem mixing the W2k and W2K3 operating systems in the same policy
No problem using ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES for the Backup selections
Yes, I do that too :-)

simply a note to be aware of having at minimum 5.1 MP5

WHY MP5?
The %windir%\registration folder on Windows 2003 clients is being
omitted from backups performed by the Veritas NetBackup (tm) Server /
Enterprise Server 5.1 and 6.0 releases, and therefore, will not be
available for restore.

Mixed Operating systems in same policy problems? What have just had one
of our Clients do a DR exercise and they reported having problems
restoring the system state on a Windows 2003 box. It has been proposed
by some that the problem rest with the fact that the backup policy has
both Windows 2k and Windows 2k3 systems (and backup selection set to
"All_Local_Drives", which should get system files, shadow copies, and
system states). I personally haven't ever encountered this, and have
actually checked my records and found that on my last DR at another
site, I was able to successfully restore 4 systems (two 2k's and two 2k3
servers) which were in the same policy. Has anyone encountered this
before?
