Thanks for all of the responses.

Basically, we knew that the older clients would be 'unsupported', but we
had no problems with the 3.4 clients even in 5.1. So, we were expecting
the exact same. I personally was very pleased that the 3.4 clients, even
though unsupported, worked in 5.1 ... and it _seemed_ during testing
that 6.0 would also have no problems. But, apparently luck ran out.

Looks like we will have to resurrect our 5.1 environment now for these
~40 machines. 10.20, and Solaris 2.6, I am afraid will always be in our
environment. They will likely never upgrade due to software that won't
allow it, or an application that is super critical that is tied to some
hardware and would cost big bucks to port to any new version of the OS.

While backwards compatibility is a beast, we had hoped. ...And, we
really had to move to 6.0 for the stability offered by especially the
newer Novell client and better integration of NDMP and BMR.

Anyway, I think the solution is going to be to get another older backup
system back in place for these older souls.

Thanks again!

Cheers!
