Paul, using robtest you should be able to unmount a tape.

1) run robtest
2) type: unload d1
3) type: m d1 s50

to move the tape in d1 to slot 50 (assuming s50 wsa empty)

Should work, I would not use the mt commands unless the robtest cmds fail.
