Yes we have 4 L700's,2 on each media server. Adding 2 more media servers
so there will be one for each L700. Our filers right now are connected
directly to the tape drives.

gotcha.
So you've got 2 media servers and each controls 2x L700s, so you've got
4x L700s in total?
are the NDMP backups "remote" to the media servers? or are your filers
connected directly to the tape drives?
so you will end up with 4 media servers, each connected to one
L700.....but one is still going to do only NDMP? (waste of a media
server?)
I assume your L700s are for tape capacity, and not the drives? not much
chance of a single media server driving 10 (20?) drives eficiently.

We have 1 master and 2 media servers. Each media server is
controlling 2 L700's. We are adding 2 more media servers and splitting
out the L700 so the each L700 has its own media server which will
control it. Currently 1 L700 does only ndmp backups and the other does
regular backups. So the tapes are in separate volume groups and tape
pools.
We are also adding a 3rd media server that will control our EMC
VTL when that goes fully into production later this year.

Well.....is your master a 3rd server? If not, ie, one is a
master/media, and the other just a media, then you will not be able to
shutdown the master/media and continue running with just the media
server....you NEED the master.
I suppose you could....you would have to inventory all of your
media, and sort them by pool/group and them put them into the
appropriate libraries, unless you've already managed your pools/STUs
previously, so the pools/gorups aren't spread over the two
libraries.....once that's done, inventory both robots, update NBU's
inventory, dump a list of all media the new media server's library has,
and run a for loop over the ids with with bpmedia/movedb command below.
Then cofigure the policies that write to a particular pool to use the
stu of the media server attached to the robot that houses that pool.

Thanks Paul. Yes we want to move the L700 media and
robotic control and all to a new server. This will allow us, among other
things, to shut down one server for maintenance while the other server
stays up and runs.
Another question. Can I move the media based on volume
group or volume pool to the new media server?
