We use Netbackup 5.0 MP6. The only way to install the client is to have
the client added in a Netbackup Policy prior to the client installation.
Is there any way to override this requirement and install the client
without it first being added to Netbackup? Thanks!

Does anyone have a standard marketing sheet on what new features 6.0 has
over 5.1? Forgetting about the scheduling difficulties for the time
being, what are the 6.0 upgrade sell points? So far I've found three
(for my environment.)

1 - Better DSSU Functionality / High & Low Water Marks
2 - Advanced Client compatibility with new SAN Features (assuming your
SAN is on their list. =P )
3 - Somewhat weak integration with Symantec Enterprise Vault

Is there anything else? New features? Faster transfer times? There's
got to be something better right?

Hi

Getting "media not in database" problem from a "recovery without
import"
(copying the images to DR ).

A phase 1 scan - a nogo as images in database.

The tapes there, images in the catalogue and browable - the two just
don't
want know about each other.
One suggestion is the media is known as hcart on one system and hcart2
on
the other ...possible problem.

Any ideas ?

For us, the plunge to 6.0 was BMR, which no longer required a Nix
server. And MP3, despite it's weaknesses, finally brought out WinPE
boot for Windows BRM restores. No more fiddling with DOS network
drivers for DOS boot disks!

And I just got engineering binaries for nbjm and nbpem, so we'll see how
the weekend backups run!

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone out there recommends monitoring software or
has a script on there master/media server that monitors the tape drives.
We are in the process of getting something but it is going to take time.
I do not have the $$'s to purchase something. I would like to get an
e-mail when a drive goes down.

Master Server Sun E450 controls the robot l700

Media Server MS Windows 2003 server controls 4 LTO2 tape drives

Media server Linux controls 6 9840B tape drives

Any ideas would be much appreciated. TIA

No - doesn't prevent new jobs other than those schedule via Netbackup
(sets "tries" to 0).

Hmm. I know this has been addressed - kill bpsched?

Anybody?

Mark,

Does your nice_shutdown prevent new jobs from coming in? Unfortunately
we use and external scheduler (Control-M) and even more unfortunately
the DBAs don't use that...So its usually a fight to kill new bpscheds
coming in.

I've shutdown bprd through bpadm but that appears to also affect normal
5.1 master to media server communication. Still, if you have a better
method than the bp.kill_all or the netbackup shutdown (with running kill
-9s on those bptm/bpscheds that won't shut down) then I'd like to review
if you don't mind.

Gracias,

Greg

You can make this a lot cleaner by adding a pre-shutdown job that
cancels all running backup jobs and waits for them to go away. If
there's no active jobs, the daemons drop pretty quick. I wrote a
utility called "nice_shutdown" that does this.

Kill -9 will stray tapes in drives and lead to all sorts of other happy
problems.

The question is when I attempt to shutdown NetBackup I get 57 lines of:
Waiting for active bpsched/bptm processes to terminate

How can I tell which bpsched/bptm process that it is waiting on.
How can I tell if the bpched/bptm process it is waiting on will
eventually terminate via the shutdown.

It's kind of like the question "How many licks does it take to get to
the center of a Tootsie Roll pop"? no one knows.
No one knows the answer to this question because we all get impatient
and just start doing a mass kill -9 on any bpsched/bptm we see.

I am asking this to see if there may be a better way than
# kill -9 `bpps | awk '{print $2}'`

The cleanup after the kill gets annoying and also is very time
consuming.
logging onto the ACSLS server and doing dismounts of the tapedrives.
yuk...

Bob
not sure what you are after, but what about stopping all services /
processes or rebooting perhaps??
Was there any more info to add to the message? Or am I missing
something?
