[Veritas-bu] FQDNs or Not ? [recommendations please]

As stated by the previous responder, it is always good practice to use
FQDN, why?

1) If your environment expands, for instance if you have more than 6
subdomains in a NetBackup environment, you are screwed (if you use
Linux) as it can only resolve up to 6 subdomains.
2) It creates confusion by using partial names, what if you have a
machine in production and standby and each have the same name but
different subdomains for instance?  How does the machine get resolved?
This creates problems with backups.

Bottom line, after about 2-3 years of doing NetBackup administration
and setup, it ultimately depends on the environment.

For instance, say you have 1000 machines, none of which share a common
domain, say each has its own domain, like at a colocation facility. 
In that case, you may be better off with an /etc/hosts file for the
clients.

However, say you have 10,000 machines in a mixed datacenter
environment with multiple subdomains, with a common domain, you'll
want to be using FQDN.

Oh the problems caused by not using FQDN... are really annoying sometimes :)
