I don't know how widely people use the 'use mappings' feature
in the Vault but there appears to be a rather fundamental bug in all
version of 6.0. I thought I would let you know so that no one else gets
caught out.

We have three different type of backup, a daily, a weekly and a
quarterly. The daily is kept for a month, the weekly 12 weeks and the
quarterly forever. Because we only have a 60 slot tape library we can't
use those retention periods in the library so we use the vault 'use
mappings' feature to change the mappings. We therefore have:-
=09

=09
        Cycle > library > vault
        Daily > 4 days > 1 month
        Weekly > 10 days > 12 weeks
        Quarterly > 10 days > infinite
=09

=09
When I set this up it just didn't work. We had created 3 new
retention periods in the Master server properties to cater for our
design. The admin guide recommends that the retention levels 0 to 9 are
left as default and the customised ones are set up from level 10 on so
that is what I did.=20
        =20
After a bit of digging I realised that the vault was sorting the
retention periods by date. The master server properties displays the
list of retention periods by retention level number whereas the vault
displays them in date order i.e. 4 days first. So in the drop down field
in the vault properties if you select the 5th drop down you actually end
up mapping the 5th option in the master server properties rather than
what the vault displays as being selected. As a work around I have had
to set the master server retention periods up so they are in date order,
starting from level 0.
        =20
I have reported this to Veritas and they have confirmed that it
is a 'defect'.
        =20
        Regards
        =20
        Richard
