I would still try and ping though, it not only addresses name resolution
but also network connectivity.

Also, I've had a few issues where network card drivers cause issues like
this, although more often they cause error 14s and the like.

When I get an error 54 its usually because the hosts cannot find
each other. It really has nothing to do with RMAN. Check DNS
resolution.

Try on the client...
ping <servername>
ping -a <server ip>

(assuming windows)

There is also a built-in NBU command to essentially do this but
I can't quite remember what it is.
