Yes, Jim, that has been my experience.
=20
We put our new LTO3 drives in the same robot as our existing LTO3
drives, and all media is LTO2, all drives and media are configured as
"HCART2"
=20
If they are not configured the same, (ie, you configure HCART2=3DLTO2 =
and
HCART3=3DLTO3) NBU will not put an LTO2 tape in an LTO3 drive.
=20
the idea is to maintina backward compatibility....the LTO3 drive writes
to the LTO2 tape as if it were an LTO2 drive, so that if the tape is
later inserted into an LTO2 drive it will continue to be able to be read
from and written to.
=20
once you add LTO3 tapes, you then need to change the config of the LTO3
drives to type "HCART3" and make sure all LTO3 tapes inserted into the
library are configured the same, otherwise you will end up with all
sorts of problems when NBU puts a LTO3 tape in an LTO2 drive.

        Hi
=09
        Is this correct ?
        =20
My understanding is when LTO-2 tapes are put into a LTO3 tape
drive the tape drive takes on all the attributes of an LTO2 tape drive
hence transfer rates, density, etc are identical to an LTO2 tape drive.
Hence in a library you can have mixed LTO-3 & LTO2 tape drives and if
all the media is LTO2 media then you will see no difference. Only when
you start using LTO3 media then things will get better for both backup
and recovery. =20
=09
Apparently LTO-3 tapes have a smart-card type of chip in them.=20
