Andy / Phil
Well you could be seeing growth due to retentions perhaps? Ie: Infinite? or
1 year retentions?
More and more backups running per day
More Full backups taking place each week (ie 2-3 times a week).
Some answers to think about :-)
Phil, Andy is right, please think of the Catalog as the heart of Netbackup -
some people will of course refer to this as the Database, but it simple is a
collection of image files. Within these files contains the data that was
backed up to take - sort of like a pointer that Netbackup uses to know where
the Data is stored for which client, which data, which file and of course
what media :-)
Best thing to do - Let Netbackup manage the Catalog - If you are running low
on space, then look at adding additional disk(s) and expand your volume, or
delete your current volume, create a new larger one and use bprecover to
bring it all back.
Remember, Netbackup (should!!) compress images for you, right after the
regular backups have run.
Take a look at this http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/238066.htm

Hope this has helped!

Hi Phil,
you have over estimated the complexity of the NBU catalog, the image
catalog is not a real database, its a filesystem structure containing a
large number of monolithic binary files for each backup images stored - so
there is no way the catalog can become fragmented as it isnt composed of
real database files like Oracle etc. When an image is expired the
corresponding file from the catalog filesystem is removed thereby freeing
space.
As to why you see growth, couldn't tell you sorry......
thanks Andy.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Catalog Question
Hi Everybody,
Netbackup 5.0 MP3 on Solaris 8. Clients are a mixture of Windows, NT and
2000 and Unix Solaris.
I'm aware of the ability to compress/cleanup images etc via the bpimage
command but have a question regarding how this works.
When images are expired/deleted from the catalog, is there any way to reorg.
the catalog so that fragmentation within the catalog is minimised.
Our catalog is 50 gb and growing with no increase in the numbers of clients.
I accept that the number of files per client is increasing but not
materially. Is there something we've missed configuration wise here?
Regards
Phil
