Yeah, I agree with most of what has been said about NDMP. However I have a
few issues with NBU and NDMP, not sure if and when it will be addressed.
 - You cannot have check point restarts for NDMP. Most of our NDMP backups
are huge, avg 4TB to 6TB volumes. So if a backup fails at the tail end, we
have to start all over again.
- Yes, we can split these large backups in to smaller (qtree level) chunks,
but then NBU doesn't support wildcards for NDMP backups. So it would be a
manual chore to keep the file list up-todate.
- Bad tapes gets used over and over again and jobs keep failing over and
over again. Normally when you have a bad media, NBU reports Status code 85,
so based on the vaule you set in
/usr/openv/netbackup/MEDIA_ERROR_THRESHOLD, NBU will freeze the tape. For
NDMP backups, its always status code 99, so NBU never freezes the tape,
resulting in the tape being used immediately and repeatedly for next NDMP
jobs and finallly the jobs fail after reaching the job retry threshold. We
had an issue one time when 8 jobs failed one after the other, all retrying
twice on the same tape!

Even with all these issues, NDMP is still very very fast for backups when
compared to doing backups over NFS or cifs. Luckly for us we only have to d=
o
40TB of NMDP backups once a month and rarely any need for restores.
