I recently came from a "Managed Service" company, where we would step
into other companies' IT departments and "take over" the day to day
activities, like backups and helpdesk etc. We had to deal with
everything under the sun and I found:

1 - Backup Exec is good for small installs with a few servers, it does
very well with "Agents" like Exchange and Oracle and its simplicity
extends into its Linux and Novell clients and servers as well. However
you can count on at least one failure per media server per month and
usually more. Restarting services usually takes care of most problems,
but having to take time to dial in and do this is a royal pain.

2 - Brightstor is a MAJOR PAIN THE (*#($%^(%^@&) to configure, but once
you've done it a few times it gets easier (like everything else.) While
difficult to initially configure the software is bulletproof and we had
Brightstor backups that would run for many months without ever having
issues. Its also easier to monitor, that is with multiple tools you can
easily scan the logs or integrate it with management software. Whereas
Backup Exec's management usually involves pouring through emails looking
for failures, I could easily get a single report from Brightstor with
only failures, noted as Warnings or Critical.

Just my $0.02..

A recent thread sang the praises of BackupExec, so it made me
wonder what other software people have experience with. Maybe, you've
recently spec'ed a new installation and had to go through a comparison
exercise?

Anyway, I'd very much appreciate hearing any success stories/war stories
etc with other products.

Thanks!

Richard.
