V.T.,

Using VSP or VSS will only partially solve your problem. For instance,
never expect VSP to make a proper backup of any database, regardless if
it is SQL, Exchange or Access. For database backups there are two
options: (1) shut down the application using a bpstart_notify script and
make a backup of the flat files. (2) Install the corresponding extension
and make 'hot' backups of the database.

For system files and open documents VSP does not always succeed. In
order to make a snapshot, VSP waits for a quiescent moment. If this
moment soes not come, the snapshot is not created, and the file is
skipped. Notorious examples of this are system files like perfmon
counters. Since you probably don't need the majority of these files, you
might as well exclude them from backup.

The best thing is to configure VSP and then make a problems report after
every backup session. For each of the open files mentioned, decide
whether you really need the file and then take the appropriate action.

Regards,

Marcel
