Indeed all that matters is that the media type of the tape matches the
media type of a drive. Of course, if you want to do any backups on new
LTO3 media you will need to change the drive type back again....

There is no need to change the barcodes now, it is just that if your
barcodes are actually AB1234L1, but the robot says it is 12324L1, you
cannot then have say different tapes with barcodes CD1234L1, as the robot
will report that too as 1234L1. It is more common to set the robot to
not report the 'L1' - it still reports the media type - and return AB1234,
CD1234 etc.

Robots vary a lot, which is why NBU also has the ability to apply a mask
to what the robot returns before applying barcode rules.

Of course changing once NBU has tapes in the database is not a simple
task!

Hi William
Well I believe I got it sorted, simply by using the GUI and changing the
format of the drive from HCART3 to HCART.

Attempted a restore, tape loaded, data recovered and its all there :-)
I did not need to change the volume name, because this was a month end,
with
a retention of 12 months. The tape was also known by NBU, because the
tapes
went into the correct volume pool.

In the next few months, we will have exhausted our needs to use LTO1
tapes,
and my understanding is, as long as NBU knows about the tapes and they
have
not expired, there should be no need to change or add rules for barcodes?

Tell me if I am wrong.

But the restore does appear to have worked fine. I am going to eject the
tapes now :-)

Any comments warmly welcome. Thanks again for the responses and leading me
into the right path

I think you need rather to change the media type of the media. Currently
they are HCART (as they are LTO1) - the L1 suffix shows that. This
command may be what you need:

Change a volume's media type
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmchange [-h volume_database_host] -new_mt
media_type
-m media_id

Whatever you do make sure you 'suspend' the tapes so they cannot be
written on by NBU. I don't think LTO3 can write on LTO1 but that will not

stop NBU trying.

Probably change to HCART3, but whatever the drive is.

I am a little surprised you library is configured (or the old one was) to
return the media type suffix to NBU (the 'L1'). Most people set up the
robot to return the leading part of the barcode only, or tell NBU to mask
out the L1, L2 etc if the library cannot do that. Otherwise you don't get
many unique barcodes!

Bob
To add to my earlier response, I went to the Reports Tool and done an
IMAGES ON MEDIA REPORT for the Tape ID's needed.
@The density shows HCART

Could not perform Media Contents - again probably due to the drives being
different!

You are going to have to change the drive type of one of the LTO3 tapes to

LTO2. It is Backward compatible to read the tape, however, NB won't load
the tape into a drive that is not of the same type.

The image has the tape type. Make sure that NB sees the tape media as the

correct type. By looking at your tape names, you may even have LTO1
media.

You can do a bpimagelist -L -backupid "your backup job id" and it will
show you what media type the image says it is on.

Guys
Wonder if you can help - trying to perform a restore from a month end
backup from 6th Nov 05.

Trouble is, in December, the Tape Library that was in use blew up and has
now been replaced by a fancy new HP EVL Library using LTO3. The previos
Library was LTO2

Using the BA and Restore tool, Netbackup sees the images and knows about
the tapes. I loaded the tapes into the library, verified they are there
and kicked off the restore. The following is logged in activity
monitor..........

Now, the robot doesnt even make an effort to load the tapes!! So I know
its not reading them, but do not understand why.
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this?

Apprecaite any help!
