Ah, never too old to learn! You are right, the -backupID switch will set
the expiration date for the image. Until now I always used the -m
(mediaID) switch, I think it was the only one available in version
3.4.1., which was the first version I was trained on. But if you look at
the commands manual for 5.1, the -backupID switch is properly described.
It will set the retention for an entire backup, even if it spans volumes
or has multiple copies, without changing the expiration date for the
other images on the same tapes.

So now when you want to set the extension for a backup you have to know
either the backupID or the tapes it resides on physically. Most of my
customers keep track of the media where their backups reside on rather
than the backupID, which is why I never bothered to look at expiring
individual backups, besides that I always thought you could not do that
anyway. But again, never too old to learn.
