If you are a NetApp shop they have acquired a nice product - Alacritus
(spelling?). It is VTL. Easy to setup and use. It has some nice
features. There is Diligent too (compression on their controller and HDS
partner). ADIC has VTL with Pathlight (turn-key). As for going to disk
you may want to look at Data Domain, Copan Systems, Storage Tek (Sun),
and HDS (I know - your are an EMC shop ;-) ). Our backup upgrade with be
a mix of tape and disk. That is driven mostly by our BCP/DR
requirements.

I have looked at the d-d-t with disk subsystems and VTL. I am not sure
that any one solution is the best. I think it would be in your best
interest to put your bias for your vendors to the side and do the
homework. Then you can provide to management a best-of-breed for your
specific situation.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] VTL vs. Disk based backups

We are looking at VTL technologies with EMC being the front leader. We
are looking at upgrading to netbackup 6.0 Solaris 10 soon. My backup
partner in crime disagree with the direction we should go. I think we
should go with disk based backups and my partner want to go with VTL.
Now since we do not have this in yet it is hard to look at both and
"see" what is better. SO has anyone here also researching this subject
and have their own opinion? We are a Netapp/EMC shop so the back disk is
not the show stopper but the future of both technologies. Any care to
share their views?=20
