If you're dealing with a lot of small files it can increase backup
performance. Many small files do not usually stream fast to tape due to
metadata cataloguing, which can cause the drives to stop and start a
lot. Disk has no such issue.

=20

This is not to say it *will* improve performance, just that it might.

=20

I'm not familiar with CDL so have no opinion on it.

=20

Personally, anything that comes from EMC is something of which I'm
wary... (not a fan! ;) )

=20

Disk backups won't necessarily improve performance. You have to take
into consideration the fact that disk drivers are written for random I/O
and that tape drivers are meant for streaming I/O, ergo, tape is better
for backup. However, it also depends on what you're comparing w/ disk,
from a tape perspective. If you have some old DLT 7000 drives that
you're comparing, disk will totally win, just by virtue of the fact that
the tape drives suck, however, if you're using an LTO III, tape will
probably beat out disk from a performance perspective.

=20

just my .02.

We are looking into backing up to disk instead of tape. We have looked
at the EMC CDL solution. I am curious to know what other solutions
people are using and their opinions on what they use.
