I recently heard the new scripting language wasn't going to make it into
Vista release.

Well it's not real scripting but between simple / complex batch file (500
lines as compared to 4). The third party tools help a lot, IE Kix32 and
some perl. Gets most of the job done.
I hear the next winblows OS is going to have some souped up scripting
language built in <snicker>. We'll probably have to turn it off as
security in the OS will most likely be poor at best.

RE: [Veritas-bu] Veritas scripting
Yep. They even had batch files all the way back to DOS 2.0 (maybe earlier -
that was the first one I worked on). Of course in those days you had to use
edlin which only allowed you to edit and see one line at a time.

Mark,
This .pdf is Fooking Kool and Most Excellent . Even though I'm in a Windoze
shop I still find the document extremely useful. I have compiled a small
set of add -in scripting tools of my own over the years. However Charles
pointed out:
" On top of these resources, learn your shell of choice (ksh, bash, etc)
and some useful text processing tools (awk, sed, maybe perl). Those
tools are the foundation of scripting and if you don't already know
them, scripting netbackup will not be easy. Master those first and the
netbackup stuff is easy. -Charlie "
I would have to agree. Since I have been batch scripting for 15 years I
find my scripts longer and use more external tools but I have been able to
build some useful scripts (minus cool html output as that is just a PITA ).
As for the book, be sure to include some Windoze samples too please. Again
Thanks!
John

Actually, this list, the Veritas man pages, and Storage Mountain
(www.storagemountain.com) are my resources. I wrote a paper on this subject
a couple of years ago for a Veritas vision conference. I'll send it to you
direct since it's too big to post here.
