VSP can be useful if it's used appropriately. We turn it off completely
when not needed but when we do need it we've had to dedicate a drive just to
VSP cache files. This was necessary (and recommended by Veritas) because
VSP would place cache files on the emptiest drive it could find, regardless
of what it was. Then we couldn't remove them without a system reboot (and
it wasn't virus software grabbing the file handle). This is no fun when
cache files fill up your quorum disk!

The configuration settings allow you to specify a specific drive to place
cache files on. Yeah, this wastes disk space but if you want open files
backed up on Windows this is the best way to do it.

So I would have to add each client in there and modify it appropriately.

Hm, currently I have the 4.5 clients such as: 50mb/150mb & VSP on but
disable snapshot and continue.

Overall, is it worth using VSP at all?

All it seems to do is produce errors and fill up the disk, and the majority
of files it fails for is big databases (30-200GB) that cannot be backed up
anyway.

The work-around would be to add EACH of 200 clients or so (for me) and then
tell it to disable the snapshot and retry and then maintain the list, etc,
with 4.5, everything was set in one place, the client host properties.

Calling out to everyone - who uses VSP, is it really useful?

Thanks,

Justin.

Yes, in Host properties->Master, then select the master and go to Client
Attributes. Add the client there and don't click Enable Windows Open File
Backup for this client.
