The below messages are from the /var/adm/messages. These messages shows 
that either the media is bad or the drive is not cleaned from very long 
time.
Please let us the know the exact error code with which backup has failed 
and also provide brief of bptm log.
You can use the "bperror -v -problems -U -jobid <actual job id> -d 
mm/dd/yyyy -e mm/dd/yyyy > bperror1.out to get the exact error message.

This looks like a media problem to me.

Whatever application did the request (obviously, NBU), requested a 
"space" command.  The tape/drive responded with sorry, EOM is detected. 
  Thats kind of odd since the "Requested Block" is 1.  Typically you'd 
get lots and lots of blocks on a tape.  What happened in the bptm log 
at the same time?
