You need the SSO option if you are sharing SAN tape drives I believe.
If the SAN media server has its own tape drives (usually local) or if
the SAN tape drives are assigned to individual systems only (a kind of
waste) then you can get by without SSO. But if you want your 10 SAN
media servers to share 4 SAN tape drives then you're stuck with buying
SSO.

I think the key is if the tape drives are configured as shared...then
those media servers accessing them need SSO. I'm no licensing expert
but that's what I've seen in my environment.

question

Does anyone know anything about the SAN media server license and the SSO
license.

Our Veritas rep had told me that the SAN media server license was
designed to allow people to backup a machine over the SAN without buying
a Media server and an SSO license (very expensive), when all they wanted
to do was backup a UNIX client over the SAN.

However I installed the SAN Media server license and got errors about
the SSO option not being licensed:

So what's the scoop...do I need the SSO option on both our master/media
server and on all SAN Media servers?
What is the use of the SAN Media Server license without
SSO??....unfortunately my Rep is on vacation this week.
