I believe that the short answer is that they all suck. We're currently
using HP's OpenView Storage Area Manager. It sucks really badly and is
in the process of being end-of-lifed and HP is migrating its customer base
to AppIQ. This will hopefully be better but the current version out
there doesn't even report on clusters properly - it can't track a volume
flipping from node to node in a cluster. It also has fat java clients
(both OVSAM and AppIQ have this - yuck!).

I've been meaning to contact Aptare about possibly coercing them to
develop something that we can use since they obviously "get it" when it
comes to enterprise software reporting. The rest of the players in the
game want to develop a massive suite of products and charge you an arm
and a leg for it and then license by the terabyte so that you continue
to pay and pay as you grow (and you're locked in so you don't have a
choice). I simply want to be able to report used versus allocated by
application across my SAN and trend this over time. Amazingly enough,
HP's OpenView Storage Area Manager couldn't even do this basic function.
I don't want to license by terabyte either - a nice fixed cost per
client will suffice. Report it up to a portal like StorageConsole does
and I'll be a very happy camper. If Aptare doesn't want to expand their
market to this, perhaps they'd be willing to do it on a contract basis
(we've talked about this internally but haven't approached Aptare yet).
