How did the file get there in the first place if his OS lacks largefile
support?

This sounds like a problem with the glibc you are using.
Can you tar cvf test.tar oradata/ora9205.tar?

One of my Redhat As 2.1 server have Veritas Netbackup version 4.5
installed 
(NetBackup-RedHat2.2 4.5GA).  When we doing backup and I found log file
have 
error message like:

00:02:58.852 [22742] <16> bpbkar: ERR - Cannot lstat
oradata/ora9205.tar. 
Errno = 75: Value too large for defined data type

The file "ora9205.tar" only 3.5GB and I got error.  Anyone know how to
fix 
this problem?
