I'm not using encryption but one other thing to keep in mind when
considering encryption is that encrypted data should be largely
indistinguishable from random data and as such doesn't really
compress. The only way to do both is if the compression happens before
the encryption. You will almost certainly lose tape capacity if you
encrypt your data.
