Wow, didn't know that. But on a Solaris 9 system a K still means 1024:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=out.bin count=1 bs=1k
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
$ ls -l out.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 rfang systems 1024 Oct 1 16:01 out.bin
