A way to combat this, I think - verification suggested - is to use
"/symlink/." as the backup path. The "." after the trailing slash follows
through the link to the linked directory.

This has been the behavior of Netbackup since at least v3.4, probably
earlier.

We were just running a test recovery of one of our backups that we run on a
Sun Solaris box and discovered that anything listed in the Backup Selections
section that was a "symbolic link" DID NOT BACKUP ANY DATA. It will backup
the directory structure but not the file itself. YOU MUST USE THE ACTUAL
PATH IN ORDER TO BACKUP ANY DATA.
For example...
We have been doing hot backups of our Oracle Databases, and dumping them
to an archive file in the following directory...
u01/home/jcsmgrEXPORT/arch
When you run the "ls -ltr" command from the EXPORTS directory it will
display the archive file as the following symbolic link ...
arch -> /u14/jcsmgr/EXPORTS/arch
We changed the directory path in the Backup Selections of the backup policy
to use the actual path ( /u14/jcsmgr/EXPORTS/arch ) and it now backs up the
data.
If you use any sybolic links on your Sun Soloris machines, it is imperitive
that you confirm whether or not any of the diretories that you are backing
up are actually symbolic links. Verify the actual directory path for the
data you wish to backup, and use that in the Backup Selections of your
backup policies.
Happy to answer any questions that I can on this.
