the problem was in fact that i hadn't uninstalled the previous version; 
and of course, once i did uninstall made sure to confirm the pkgrm was 
part of an upgrade procedure! once i had uninstalled VRTSnetbp the 4.5 MP6 
install and post-install configuration ran smoothly

i guess i should've guessed it was a full release given that it was an ISO 
..but when you've been stuck on 3.4 four years running, the bright shiny 
world of new(ish) software and that whole FP/MP structure was .... 
blinding.
