Hi all,

below the opinions and experiences that reached me regarding the reliability of
SDLT320/600 drives. Thanks to those who answered.

Regards
Marcus

*****************************

The tape has proved reliable enough, but the drive is not a 24/7 drive and will
fail regularly if you use it in that fashion. Best guess is the SDLT drive is
a 14/7 drive. Used within that limit they are great.
~JK

*****************************

Actually they work fine for nearline as well. The problem is how much you
backup and how frequently. If your backups run *no longer* than 14 hours a
day, 7 days a week they should work quite well. If you run backups near 24/7
then look to something else. We don't run 24/7 but over a weekend all drives
are spinning constantly from Friday at 9pm to late Monday morning with backups.
After that probably 40% are busy through the day doing db backups or restores.

Short of it is SLDT is fine for normal nightly backups. But if your
environment is exceedingly large or your data set is such that you backup
constantly, SDLT is not your drive.

Like I said though the media has been rock solid, it's just the drives that
have had issues.

~JK

*****************************

We've been using SDLT220 tapes since our library was installed about 3-4
years ago. We have not yet had a single tape failure and we're up to about
750 tapes in our pools. The drives barely need cleaning - we haven't
used up a single cleaning tape yet. We started with 6 transports and
we're up to 8 now. We do get media write failures (error 84) regularly
but NetBackup retries the jobs and all is well.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy more SDLT drives/media. I expect we'll
upgrade to the fiber SDLT600 drives next year.

I hope this helps,
        .../Ed

And finally a statement from Overland Storage:

Hi Marcus,

All I can say at this point in time is that we've had no reported failures
/ RMA replacements since we started shipping the SDLT600's. I don't have
the number of units shipped in EMEA but I know they appear on the April
price list so they've been available for approximately 4 months.

I hope this helps.
