I read the section indicated below and I understood is that the tape
can have any amount of numbers in the bar code, however NetBackup works only
with six, therefore of the bar code rule creation exists, is for the user to
choose which are the positions of the code he wants to use and how.

Barcode Length
Specify the length of the barcode for tapes in this robotic library and for
this rule.

Media ID Generation Rule
A rule consists of a maximum of six fields that must be delimited by colons.
Numbers in
the fields of the rule define the positions of the characters in the barcode
that are to be
extracted. For example, 2 in a field extracts the second character from the
barcode
(numbering is from the left). The numbers can be specified in any order.
Characters prefixed by # in a field result in that character being inserted
in that position in
the generated ID. Any alphanumeric characters that are specified must be
valid for a
media ID.
The following table shows some examples of rules and the resulting media
IDs. You can
use rules to create media IDs of many varied formats, but keep in mind that
the difference
in the label on the media and the generated media ID may make it difficult
to keep track
of your media.

and the one that I understood is that the ribbon can have any amount of
numbers in the bar code, however NetBackup works only with 6, for that the
rule of bar code creation exists for the user to choose which are the
positions of that code that he wants to use and that it forms.

For some reason I'm not finding that section in the documentation available
from VERITAS' site. I've checked multiple MM Guides and other versions of
the 4.5 Guide are producing errors in Acrobat Reader. Can you type/FAX the
paragraph?

I think what you're looking at is the number of characters NetBackup can
actually use in creating the bar code. NetBackup 3.4 only was able to use
the last six characters of a bar code for its media ID. Starting w/ 3.4.1,
NetBackup allows you to assign any of the characters on a bar code (as long
as the bar code isn't too long) to create a media ID but you're still
limited to six characters for that media ID.

Hope this helps.
