There is also an add-on option out there called flashbackup that backs 
up those files as if they were on raw parition but still gives the 
ability to restore file by file.  There is info on the website but 
mostly it looks at the disk and maps the structure and backs up based on 
that - it is designed for millions of small files.  Just came out on 
Windows in 5.0 - has been out on Solaris and HP since 3.4 or so
