First of all, you're doing nothing wrong. You were aware that you had to
physically tell the NB master that client2 (client you want to restore to)
is authorized to restore files from client1 (client where data was backed
up).
Here's all you need to do:
on the NetBackup master, in the /usr/openv/netbackup/db directory, create a
directory called altnames. In the altnames directory create a file with the
exact syntax of the NetBackup hostname of the client you want to restore
TO. Vi this file in add the hostname of the NB client you want to restore
from.
So, in the altnames directory, you would run this, touch client2 (if this is
the syntax of the restore to client/client name) in the NB. Then,
vi client2 file and add client1 hostname, save and exit. The directory
structure would look like:
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/altnames/client2
Try the restore again and it should work. If you don't care which client
restores data from which server, instead of creating a client2 file, you
could create a file called No.Restrictions. This tells NetBackup that any
client/server can restore data from any other client/server.

I am trying to restore data to a different server than it was backed up on.
I went to the machine I wanted to restore on, opened the client and
specified the Netbackup machines. When trying to pull the file list it
fails. I went to the master and added the new machine as a server
authorized on the old machine.
I still get "ERROR: Client not validated to perform the requested
operation."
What am I doing wrong?? Thanks
