We have a large investment in DLT tapes (well, large for our company),
so we wanted backwards read/write, which would only be possible on the
DLT 8000. Our current plan is to do our big Oracle backups on the SDLT,
the Novell/NT backups on the 4-drive juke, and use the DLT8000 to make
dupes and for some of our smaller (Red Hat, et. al.) backups. As we get
the feel for SDLT backup times, we'll probably move more and more
backups to SDLT.

The 4-drive juke is EOL on support, so we're trying to phase it out;
but we still have a lot of DLT's that are relatively new.

Once the 4-drive juke dies, we'll probably just add another magazine
and move the DLT and SDLT to different magazines.

The tapes for the SDLT and the DLT8000 are incompatible and cannot be
written to by both drives so you will need to be adding 2 different
types
of DLT tapes into your library and assigning the DLT and SDLT media
different media types. So now when your backup runs there is no way to
tell the backup to use this drive over the other one, it's either use
both
drives equally, or use one drive and not the other.

I am curious as to why you got the 2 different drives in your library
tho,
as I recall SDLT drives can read DLT tapes so you would not have had a
problem reading your old backups for restores.

Greetings, list.

I currently have a 4-drive DLT juke, and I'm adding a second robot
(Overland Neo 2000) with a SDLT and a DLT8000. I'm verifying how
existing policies should use my cool new 'bot. I'm thinking I can
change
the 'destination storage unit' to my new robot and create a new pool,
and life will be good. Is there something else I should be doing?

Also, can I create a new storage unit that has both the SDLT and the
regular DLT, with a 'use the SDLT, but if you run out of scratch
tapes,
use the DLT' type of setup?

Sorry if this isn't all that coherent. It's still early in Seattle.
:>)

Thanks in advance,

-dd
