A 3-way NDMP configuration allows multiple NDMP servers to share a single
storage device that's physically connected to just one of them. It's part of
the NDMP protocol. Since the process is driven from the Netbackup server,
that's where they come up with the 3-way connotation. Works great.

Hi Dave,
I currently use a StoraeTek 9714 to backup my NetApp system. Yes you will need
to have a dedicated drive attached to the NetApp. If your library only has two
drives, then effectively you now only have one drive for all your client
systems and one for the NetApp system. Also to consider, the Nightly backup is
still running and an urgent restore is required - you only have a single drive
to do both! (see below for a possible work around for the restore).
Another method to backup the Filer, could be via NFS mounts and not using NDMP,
and therefore not 'losing' a drive to the Filer, BUT considering the amount
of data that the Filers store I wouldn't consider this option, draging many
GBytes of data over the network !!!
I'm unsure what you mean by "3-way ndmp backups" ?
Also if you backup data via NDMP from the NetApp, you are will be restricted in
it's recovery. It must be restored via NDMP, this can be a problem not being
able to restore to another non-NDMP client machine!! (HOWEVER - it is possible
to recover an NDMP backup via a SUN system, which you have). I have got some
notes on how to restore NDMP backups via a SUN system.
I have a dedicated drive to my NetApp , but I also have 4 other drives I can
use. I think that the NetApps are "the best thing since sliced bread", fast,
reliable, easy to manage ......
Hope this helps.
