May I piggy-back on to this question to ask a related question:

We may also be having drive problems. In order to provide good evidence for
the vendor,
is it possible to force Netbackup to choose a particular drive for a
particular tape
(for a particular test or retry)?

I guess if just running bpverify, one can "DOWN" all drives except the one
you want, but
if running bpduplicate (which is what is actually failing in our case, on
the read tape), you
need 2 drives, so I'd like to be able to force the read tape onto a specific
drive to try to
prove if it was the drive failing the previous time), and that's a bit
trickier.

(Sounds like we should probably have our drives checked over in any case
though).

With thanks,

Mike.

Quite possibly it is.

However, what you may be looking at is not a bad tape, but perhaps you have
a questionable tape drive. Back in my consulting days, I had a client with
a very similar issue.

Try running:
bpimmedia -U and see what device wrote the image to this tape.

Then you may want to try downing all drives except the one that wrote the
image to the tape in question, the re-run your restore and see if that
clears up your problem.

If it does, you may want to have your Library Vendor come on site to check
the calibration of your drives and specifically the drive in question.

NBU 4.5 MP3 on Solaris Master. Doing a Force_Restore _Media_Server restore
of a Windows NT Microsoft Exchange Server.
Four tapes are involved in this restore. On the fourth tape we get error
code 5 abort. The bperror says "tapemark of blank tape encountered reading
media header."

Does that mean the tape is hosed? Or can I try again in the hope that the
second attempt can work its way through?
