I just got this question from one of the DBAs here - they're trying
to do an alternate system restore of a database using RMAN. Unfortunately
it's in an outsourced environment that I don't have access to.

While I think the error that is showing up is related to something like
altnames not being set up properly, I can't check.

AFAIK the master server is a Win2K system, the clients in this case are
HP/UX 11i.

Anybody seen the error in question and maybe have a pointer?

Support is suggesting MP3 or better (I think the environment is currently
at MP2).
