Look in the NetBackup SAG, Appendix C. Reference Topics' section titled=20
"How NetBackup Builds Its Automatic-Backup Worklist"

It does a very good job explaining the entire process, including the=20
questions you're asking about.

Hi David
=20
I am a little unsure how to configure Netbackup (3.4) to do this, do you=20
create schedules that overlap each other start time? for example:
=20
Daily backup configured to run every day
Weekly for Thursday, Friday Saturday
Monthly for Saturday, Sunday=20
=20
Am I right in thinking NB will select the most appropriate backup to run,=20
even though they overlap? How does this work, does it use frequency,=20
retention levels etc?
=20
Thanks very much!

Timothy.

What I have done in my previous job as a consultant is create daily=20
backups that run every 14 hours (open at 6pm close at 6am), this ensures=20
the start at or near the 6pm mark, depending on when bpsched would=20
"wake-up". My weekly backup frequency set for every 5 days with only=20
Thursday, Friday and Saturday with open windows of opportunity. This=20
ensures that all of my weekly backup jobs will always start on Thursday,=20
but use Friday and Saturday as my "rain dates" just in case we hit some=20
errors on Thursday. And Monthly fulls I would set at every 26 days, with=20
Saturday and Sunday as the only two days open for the backup window. This =

ensures that every "month" my monthly full will run on a Saturday and use=20
Sunday if necessary due to errors.
=20
I would spread out the full backups across the week for the various=20
policies (classes) to meet the client expectations for backup.
=20
I found frequency schedules to be much more flexible, personally.
=20
Just a thought.

Thanks to Rockey Reed for a smilar answer.
=20
I dont think this will work in my environment - currently for my weekly=20
backups, the frequency is set to every 8 hours (size of backup window) -=20
The reason I did not set it to 1 week is that if the backup starts one=20
minute to the end of the backup window, it could potentially miss the next =

window as one week away is one minute to the end of the backup windows the =

following week.
=20
I would appreciate any thoughts on best practice. I have 4 Hourly, Daily,=20
Weekly (and soon to be, if we can get it working Monthly) backups with=20
three pools - Application, Database and System (for each type of backup).=20
Do people create lots of classes for each filesystem mount or do you group =

schedules (i.e daily) together?
=20
Thanks,
Timothy
