Apparently my case is different, for several of my WinXP clients get the 
174 status code most of the time, even if one of them is doing an 
incremental and the Netbackup server gigabit interface is otherwise idle.

One thing not mentioned in my original post: All of my WinXP clients 
have (only) 100mb connections; the NBU server gigabit should not be 
stressed in any obvious way.
