You might see an increase in speed if you increase the default block size
that tar uses (see options for tar).  This, however, might make recovery of
the data more difficult as you will need that block size to un-tar as well.
Remembering what tar file has what block size might be difficult.

I do a lot of non-netbackup archiving via tar so I wont clutter up my
netbackup catalog.

Writing to my ultrium 2 drive via tar ( sun's or gnu tar ) only gets me
about 15MB/sec.

Writing to it via NBU gets me 30MB/sec with the SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS &
NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS settings cranked up.

Is there a way to speed things up with regular tar ?
