Josh,

I'm afraid your wrong. You can not backup a 3.2 client to a 4.5 Master.=20
You can only go one version back, so 3.4 to 4.5 is ok.

It is my understanding that you can still use backward compatability up
to two releases so 3.2 will work until 5.0. Someone please correct me
if I am wrong.

Thx

The batch migrate doesn't purge files. Try the migloc command or to
purge all purgable files see the migpurge command.

Hi all,I'm doing a VSM test now.I had finish the base configuration and
the storage method is NB,then I do a batch migrate, some seconds later
the operation been finish and succeeded. From the FILE BROWES display all
file in the test filesystem had been migrated. But from the NBU console I
can't see any policy about VSM,and the diskunit is empty, the output of
df is the same as the display before the batch migration. What's wrong?
Thanks!

We're just starting to implement NetBackup with our W2K servers, and
we've run
into a similar problem. Our server is running NetBackup 4.5.5 under
Solaris 8. At
this point, the server can communicate with the client, but as soon as
the client
starts up a backup stream, it just hangs (e.g. it looks like it's
starting to
transfer data, but it just sits there forever). We've got about 20
unix based
clients that work without problems. We've also tested the client on
some XP systems
which also work ok, so it seems to be something specific to the W2K
boxes.

I'm getting ready to put a support call into Veritas, so I'll post a
followup as
soon as I find out what's going on.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Managing a Unix/Solaris server from W2K desktop

Environment: We're currently running 1 solaris NB 4.5 mp5 server in our
main datacenter and 10 NB 4.5 servers in our remote sites.

The solaris server used to be v3.4 and we used a Java Client on our W2K
desktops to manage it. We cannot find a 4.5 equivilent app that will
function on the W2K platform. Our current method for managing the
solaris server is to use cywin to access a Redhat box where we can then
telnet into our server and run a emulated version of the java app.

I have heard rumors that we need to have feature pack 3 in order to
obtain a W2K compatible utility, but as we are on the MP track this is a
jagged pill to swallow.

Any advice is welcome.

We've found that the Vault option will delete the images on Disk ONLY
after ALL Vault jobs have completed. We have 2 Vaults, one is disk to
tape, one is tape to tape. If the tape to tape Vault is running, the
disk to tape Vault will not delete images until the other Vault has
completed. Kinda lame....

Also, in regard to:

"If your Disk fills up before the backups complete does NBU
automatically know to roll those images to tape, or do you have to
manually kick that process off?"

We have the disk to tape Vault configured to run at a very high
frequency (every hour). This and proper sizing for the disk pool have
made so the disk won't get full in the time period configured.

We are trying use disk units also in conjunction with the Vault option
and what we are seeing is that Vault will expire the images after they
get copied to tape but the actually images do not get deleted then. So
the Vault policy / process is working fine but the cleanup part is not.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something we need to
schedule ourselves?

We back up about 20 percent of our stuff to disk. It's especially
effective for clients connected over a slow link, avoiding tying up a
tape drive for a long period of time.

The basic concept is that we defined a disk storage unit, which is just
a directory on disk somewhere. The images are written as files to this
directory. I have a script that kicks off at the end of the night. It
lists the file names and builds a bpduplicate job that creates two new
copies of each image, copy 2 and 3, making copy 2 the new primary (all
basic options from the admin manual). These two new copies are on
tapes, one to stay in the robot (copy 2), one to go offsite. Once the
duplications are successful, the script runs bpexpdate to expire the
disk image (copy 1).

If througput becomes an issue, I can split it into multiple
bpduplication jobs.

Works pretty slick.

Wow,

Great question. I am interested in this as well. Our robots go widely
un-utilized during the day, and then get maxed out at night during the
backup window. We just don't have the bandwidth to finish everything
during that relatively small backup window. Any increase in performance
makes a HUGE difference for our site.

Folks,
In various recent threads, some people have mentioned using
"backup to disk" (and then (e.g.) dup'ing to tape) as a way of
accelerating backups, getting reduced backup windows etc.

If you are doing this, could I ask you, please, to let me know
some details of what sort of equipment you're using, any gotchas with
this approach?

I'm asking because our current 1.8 Tbyte data volume looks set to
grow to 5-6 Tbyte and I don't think our current approach (ATL P3000 + 5
DLT drives) will scale to that sort of data volume.

&gt;Lately we did a few changes in our NT environment.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt;1) Upgraded all W2K to SP3<br>
&gt;2) Installed the Microsoft Fix for the Blaster problem<br>
&gt;3) Switched from Norton Antivirus to Virus Scan 7.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt;Since then we experience allot of problems with backups that hang,<br>
&gt;start working and do nothing but occupy the que and prevent other jobs<=
br>
&gt;from being executed, which leads to 196 (Backup Window Exceeded).<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt;<br>
We're just starting to implement NetBackup with our W2K servers, and<br>
we've run<br>
into a similar problem. &nbsp; Our server is running NetBackup 4.5.5 under<=
br>
Solaris 8. &nbsp;At<br>
this point, the server can communicate with the client, but as soon as<br>
the client<br>
starts up a backup stream, it just hangs (e.g. it looks like it's<br>
starting to<br>
transfer data, but it just sits there forever). &nbsp; We've got about 20<b=
r>
unix based<br>
clients that work without problems. &nbsp; We've also tested the client on<=
br>
some XP systems<br>
which also work ok, so it seems to be something specific to the W2K<br>
boxes.<br>
</tt></font>
<br><font size=3D1><tt>&nbsp;I'm getting ready to put a support call into V=

followup as<br>
soon as I find out what's going on.<br>

<br><font size=3D1><tt>We back up about 20 percent of our stuff to disk. &n=
bsp;It's especially<br>
effective for clients connected over a slow link, avoiding tying up a<br>
tape drive for a long period of time.<br>
</tt></font>
<br><font size=3D1><tt>The basic concept is that we defined a disk storage =
unit, which is just<br>
a directory on disk somewhere. &nbsp; The images are written as files to thi=
s<br>
directory. &nbsp;I have a script that kicks off at the end of the night. &n=
bsp;It<br>
lists the file names and builds a bpduplicate job that creates two new<br>
copies of each image, copy 2 and 3, making copy 2 the new primary (all<br>
basic options from the admin manual). &nbsp; These two new copies are on<br>
tapes, one to stay in the robot (copy 2), one to go offsite. &nbsp;Once the=
<br>
duplications are successful, the script runs bpexpdate to expire the<br>
disk image (copy 1).<br>

Wow,<br>
</tt></font>
<br><font size=3D1><tt>Great question. &nbsp;I am interested in this as wel=
l. Our robots go widely<br>
un-utilized during the day, and then get maxed out at night during the<br>
backup window. We just don't have the bandwidth to finish everything<br>
during that relatively small backup window. Any increase in performance<br>
makes a HUGE difference for our site.<br>

Folks,<br>
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In various recent threads, some people have mentioned =
using<br>
&quot;backup to disk&quot; (and then (e.g.) dup'ing to tape) as a way of<br>
accelerating backups, getting reduced backup windows etc.<br>
</tt></font>
<br><font size=3D1><tt>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; If you are doing this, could I =
ask you, please, to let me know<br>
some details of what sort of equipment you're using, any gotchas with<br>
this approach?<br>
</tt></font>
<br>
<br><font size=3D1><tt>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I'm asking because our current =
1.8 Tbyte data volume looks set to<br>
grow to 5-6 Tbyte and I don't think our current approach (ATL P3000 + 5<br>
DLT drives) will scale to that sort of data volume.<br>
