I just finished configuring a STK 700e with 10 LTO-2 drives running SSO
to a E15K with 9 Domains. The storage was an EMC DMX 2000 on a Brocade
12000 and Emulex 9002 2GB Fiber Channel.
 
Now these servers had little to no activity on them since they were
brand new and still being staged  but the tests that I ran saw anywhere
from 40 to as much as 58MB/sec transfer rate per drive with four
filesystem multiplexed to the one drive.
 
I need needed to jack up the netbackup buffers to about 128K and 16
streams I believe. The default settings were barely getting me 20MB  a
drive.
 
So I know that NBU 4.5 MP5 will push the LTO-2 fast enough, but when you
start using LTO-2 drives, you have the potential to have bottlenecks at
other places.  
 
You need the CPU horsepower, the fiber channel and the high speed fiber
disks (EMC, Hitachi, StorageWorks etc etc)
 
I was working on a similar setup 3 weeks ago but we were using LTO-1
drives.  The biggest difference is that these E15 was very heavily
loaded.  The run load on any given 8 CPU domain was around 50..  With so
much working going on in Solaris, I was having trouble reaching 12MB/sec
on a single LTO-1 drive.   So in my opinion, CPU horsepower is very
relevant when dealing with high speed fiber channel backups

I'm curious to know what others are experiencing with their tape drive
speeds.
 
We have an array of tape drives, but the ones I am most interested in
right now are:
 
LTO-1
LTO-2
 
I'm getting what I think is rather poor performance from my LTO-2
drives.  NetBackup is running in its "stock" condition because some of
the media servers are application servers as well and they don't want me
to negatively affect the application servers performance.
 
I'm seeing between 4 and 9 MB/sec.  
 
Any ideas?
