How does the SG driver work? Doesn't it need to talk through the st driver
to get its work done?

I'm using the IBMtape driver (v4.0.5.9 and v4.0.7.3) on three Solaris 8
systems. Planning to bring the one using the old version up to the latest
version later this week sometime.

I have it that it does not use either the st.conf or mt.conf files at all.
I get rid of those entirely, and just use the IBMtape.conf file, and the
tapeutil to do various hardware things. I still use lb.conf, but it's very
barbones.

What I did was
1. rm everything in /dev/rmt/
2. install the IBMtape drive "pkgadd -d ./IBMtape.Solaris.4.0.7.3.bin".
3. boot -r
4. Check out the IBMtape.conf file a little. Really, just make sure the
target and lun addresses are all there for my drives.

On one of my systems they come up looking like this:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          53 Jul  8 16:25 /dev/rmt/1st ->
../../devices/pci@1f,4000/ANTR,2u3wl@4/IBMtape@1,0:st
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          55 Jul  8 16:25 /dev/rmt/3st ->
../../devices/pci@1f,4000/ANTR,2u3wl@4,1/IBMtape@2,0:st
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          53 Jul  8 16:25 /dev/rmt/5st ->
../../devices/pci@1f,4000/ANTR,2u3wl@5/IBMtape@3,0:st
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          55 Jul  8 16:25 /dev/rmt/7st ->
../../devices/pci@1f,4000/ANTR,2u3wl@5,1/IBMtape@4,0:st

I then just define the drives as 1st,3st,5st and 7st. I don't try and use
the other device names there.

I make sure the IBMtape.conf file lun and target addresses correspond to the
1,0; 2,0; 3,0; and 4,0 for the drives there. It all just works from there.
The stanza for the /dev/rmt/5st device -- 3,0 drive looks like this:

name="IBMtape"
        class="scsi"
        target=3 lun=0
        block_size=0
        buffering=1
        immediate=0
        trailer=0
        sili=0;

Really doesn't require much from my point of view after that. Just works.

Whoa!

Now we've just spent several weeks trying to get Veritas to tell us how to
use the IBM tape driver in Solaris (the Solaris st driver doesn't supply all
the debugging info we wanted). Veritas does not support use of the IBMtape
driver at all. IBM's redbook on LTO for Open Systems does not give
instructions for using the IBMtape driver either - it explains how to use
the st driver.

Veritas has no instructions on how to use the IBMtape driver - they even
combed through their consulting secrets and couldn't find anything.

Are there people using the IBMtape driver with Solaris?

I assume that to use tapeutil you need to have the IBMtape driver installed.

When you're using IBM drives on Solaris, you normally want to get the
IBMtape driver and then use the IBMtape.conf file. You could then also use
the IBM utilitiy for the drives, tapeutil option #48: Query/Set Parameters.

Does anyone have the st.conf settings for IBM LTO-1 drives so that they are
in variable block mode?

I've taken the advice of a few of you and tried to "tune" my system only to
find a new error, " too many data blocks written". According to the support
site that has this listed for DLT, you have to put your drives in variable
block mode. I haven't been able to find that yet for my LTO-1 drives.

Thanks

J
