Dear all RMAN users and experts,

We use RMAN here to backup up Oracle databases in various flavours of 8i and
9i, using Netbackup 3.4 on Solaris 2.6 with an StorageTek L700 containing
DLT7000s.

Each Oracle backup kicks of multiple Netbackup streams, one per tablespace I
believe.

If we get a failure of one or a number of streams, often the Auto schedule
will return code 0. Netbackup will retain images for all of the successful
streams, even though these would be no use (I think) to restore from and
even though RMAN will not (I think) keep a record of the backup.

I believe that RMAN can give us a list of when backups were taken, and we
can use this to (somehow) identify which Netbackup images are partial, with
a view to expiring them.

1. How does RMAN link its images to Netbackup i.e. does it store the
Netbackup backup ID - so we could link on this - or will we have to try to
be clever with dates?

2. Is it possible to get the Auto schedule to pick up on failure of some
streams, and return a failure code, possibly preventing this problem of some
streams images being retained?

thanks for any advice...

Phil
