We have implemented an Adaptec Durastor External Fibre disk array. We
mainly use it to temporarily hold backup images, until they can be
duplicated to tape. This was implemented to increase the number of
concurrent jobs that can run, which is important in our environment because
we do not mulitplex. So now the number of active jobs is nolonger limited
by the number of tape drives. Additionally, we don't have to worry about
media errors or drive problems slowing down backups or causing a retry.
Over the last 3 months, which is how long this solution has been in place, I
have not experienced any errors writing to disk. We still get some some
media errors when duplicating to tape, but these occur outside of the backup
window. Previously (without multiplexing) we were not able to backup to the
tape drives at max speed, for the exception of about 10% of our servers.
But, when duplicating from disk to tape, we are writing at max tape drive
speed, which is about 5mb/sec for our DLT 7000 drives.

If you are looking to permanently store images on a disk, the Adaptec
Durastor will most likely not meet your scalability, performance, or
redundancy requirements.

Has anyone out here implemented an ATA disk solution to do disk backups with
DataCenter 4.5? If so I would be interested in feedback. We are considering
both the STK BladeStore and the NetApp NearStore. Also, we have an all
Solaris master/media environment...
