I've done this for Oracle using basically the same technique. YMMV with
informix but your idea seems sound.

Is your DB writing to raw disks now? If you're using a filesystem on your
data drives, you'll be ahead by backing up files & not raw disk. With raw
disk, you have to move every block, with filesystem you only move occupied
blocks.

For oracle, the technique I used was:

1. Place DB tablespaces in hot backup mode (quiesces the data drives)
2. split BCV's for data disks.
3. Put DB in run mode (non-hotbackup or whatever you call it)
4. Roll the redo logs (write active redo to archived redo & start a new log)
5. split the archived-redo disks
6. mount data & archived-redo BCV's on another server
7. back it up.
8. re-silver the BCV's (if you delay the silver, then you've got an
instantly restorable, on-disk backup, too.)

Check with EMC - they've got tons of whitepapers on BCV techniques for lots
of different products.

Hi,
I'm hoping some of you have done this before.
I have EMC bcv's and Informix instance on a HP-UX system. I would like to
split the data base off and use NBU
to do a cold backup of the raw data residing on the bcv's.
If memory serves me correctly:
I would have to status the data base in Hot backup mode.
Stop writes to the instance, then split the bcv's
Resume writes to the instance
Take the database out of hot backup mode
Then use NBU to do a raw backup of the data

Anyone know if this is correct and will provide a valid backup?

The reason for this is we already have the bcv's and the cost of additional
Veritas licenses for the Informix piece
is not in the budget. We currently do a level zero to a stand alone DLT for
Informix and backup all mounted filesystems
with NBU. We would like to have NBU managing all the tapes and backups.
TIA
