You can select compression within the backup policy.  Just remember, this
will take additional CPU cycles on the client side and may not raise your
compression level any further than what the drive can do.  Your best bet
would be to send the data to the tape drive as fast as possible and allow
the drive to compress it.  To determine if software compression will help,
create a directory with a set amount of data in it, back it up without
software compression, then try again with it.

Tuning is a crap-shoot in some cases....

how do i configure NBU to compress the data that it is going to backup?

You cannot set the ratio (wish that you could though!)  You can control
compression on a yes/no basis by configuring your OS appropriately but after
that compression is as good as the source data will let it be.

Why would you not compress?
