The problem we have is that an NT Media Server has to make sure there are no
NBU backups running at a certain time because a load of a database will
occur. Sometimes, the backups run late, the scheduled NETSTOP is run which
causes the UNIX Master Server (version 4.5A) to lose connectivity to the
NT's LTID daemon. The backup tapes are left in the shared drives that are
connected on the SAN - they do not unload. The other media servers don't
know the drives have tapes in them so NBU continues to try to load tapes
into those drives. The L700 robot can't load the tapes, so NBU DOWNS the
drives and FREEZES the tapes. You can't run robtest to unload the tapes from
the drives because you get a "no permission" error. Once the DB load on the
NT Media Server is done, and NBU services are automatically started at its
scheduled time, then you can run robtest to work on getting drives unloaded
and getting the drives UP.

Of course, this NETSTOP occurs at 2AM in the morning, so when the above
scenario happens, we have 4-6 DOWN drives for almost 7 hours until the NT
NBU services are restarted on that one Media Server - unfortunately, big
bottlenecks have occured, not to mention all the FROZEN tapes.

What we now plan on doing is use bpdbjobs -kill on NT Media Server to kill
the backup processes first, and then do the NETSTOP. We feel that the NT
kill executable and the bpdown command will not unload the tapes whereas
bpdbjobs -kill should properly shutdown the backup and unload the tape, thus
making the drive free.

can't you do a net stop <service name>

with Nt/2k?

if so, maybe it can be scripted

What is the NT media server's equivalent to the UNIX bp.kill_all command?
Does NT also have a /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies directory?
